You would have to be living on the moon not to know that smoking cigarettes are bad for your health. However, for some people who continue to smoke or for people who are thinking about smoking the following facts about how this habit can damage your health should help you to change your mind.

Fact 1
Smoking restricts the blood vessels. This can cause the blood to flow less effectively through the body to deliver much needed vitamins and minerals. It as well restricts the amount of oxygen reaching the skin. Long term smokers have bad skin. The damage caused by smoking can make a smoker look ten years older or more compared to a person of the same age who does not smoke.

Fact 2
Smoking damages the lungs. Users can have complexy breathing properly because smoke swells and narrows the airways. It lines them with a sticky mucus and phlegm. That is why it is ordinary to hear a smoker with a wheezy cough.

Fact 3
50 % of long term smokers will die due to using cigarettes.

Fact 4
The tobacco used to make cigarettes contains over 4000 chemicals and over 60 of these chemicals can be linked to causing cancer.

Fact 5
Smoking is an addiction like any treatment. As well as a physical, smoking is a psychological addiction. This is why smokers discover it very complex to give up. To help them they need to rely on nicotine aids that substitute the cravings from smoking cigarettes. Sometimes these help however, for many the cravings become too much and they give in.

Fact 6
90 % of all lung cancers are caused by smoking.

Fact 7
Even though, cigarettes receive the worst press about the damage they do other categories of tobacco are just as bad. Whether it is the tobacco used for rolling cigarettes, the chewing variety or the sweet smelling shag for smoking the pipe, all tobacco can damage your health.

Fact 8
Even though smoking use to look cool it will not help you attract the opposite sex, especially if they are a healthy non smoker. They will be able to smell you a mile off because your clothes will be reeking of smoke. Even if you manage to get close sufficient your bad breath or stained teeth will put the sword to any kind of romantic interlude.

There you go. The next time you feel the need to light up or if you are thinking it must be cool to smoke because all my friends do, then read through these facts and think again. Do you really want to do that to your body?

n fact smoking – and passive smoking – have a seriously detrimental effect on the ABC’s of diabetes management

Here are some reasons why mixing diabetes with smoking is a very bad idea:

You are more likely to get nerve damage (neuropathy). This is because smoking affects your blood circulation and that in turn means your nerve endings are not getting the nutrients they need. If this happens to the nerves in your feet it could lead to sores and infections and, if not taken care of properly, even amputation.

There is an increased risk – double in fact -of you getting limited mobility in your joints. It’s no fun trying to bend, climb stairs or lift something when you have a painful joint.

Because of smoking you could develop kidney disease.

When you smoke your blood pressure increases. Increased blood pressure creates a real risk of heart disease.

Research has shown that diabetics who smoke increase, 3-fold, the risk of dying of heart (cardiovascular) disease.

By smoking you increase your blood-sugar levels. This makes it more difficult to control your diabetes because your glucose levels could be fluctuating quite dramatically. This, in turn, leads to other problems.

And it also increases your cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of a heart attack.

In fact smoking – and passive smoking – have a seriously detrimental effect on the ABC’s of diabetes management:

A – 1C – the measurement of your blood glucose over a 3-month period
B – your blood pressure, which should be below 130/80
C – your cholesterol levels. Cholesterol levels include LDL, HDL and triglycerides. Your LDL should be below 100. HDL levels should be above 40 (for men) and above 50 (for women). Tryglycerides should be below 150.

And, of course, on top of all that there’s the proven risk of cancer!

An Indonesian man lost six teeth and suffered 51 stitches to his mouth after the cigarette he was smoking exploded.

Indonesia is one of the largest markets for cigarette manufacturers in the world, with more than 60 percent of men smoking.
An Indonesian man has lost six teeth after a cigarette he was smoking reportedly exploded, a media report said on Tuesday. His helmet was also found to have cracked. And that mysterious explosion required numerous stitches for him.
Bekasi Police investigators are waiting on the results of laboratory tests.
Iwan Sulistyo, the marketing chief of the Clas Mild brand by PT Nojorono Tobacco, said the company was perplexed by the explosion.

The cigarette maker said its products did not contain any explosive material. “We are communicating with the police and still waiting on the forensic laboratory tests,” Iwan said in an Interview with The Jakarta Globe. “We do not put any strange materials in the cigarettes so we think that this is a weird case. This is the first time for us.”

Iwan confirmed, however, that the company had agreed to provide compensation and would also ensure that Andi’s medical bills were paid in full.

For the sake of research, more than 250 healthy people who were regular smokers were studied, and scientists measured their levels of cotinine, a by-product of nicotine, which has been linked to increased risk of lung cancer.

The team of researchers, from the Penn State College, then went on to conclude that waiting to smoke until after breakfast reduces the amount of the dangerous chemical. Also, the study revealed thatearly morning smokers need more help to kick the habit.

Although exact reasons for the difference in levels of cotinine in those who smoke early morning and those who wait are still unclear, researchers think that early morning smoking might “reflect a more intense way of smoking”, as their need seems to be greater than those who can wait.

The detailed study has been published in the Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

Tobacco smoking is a major cause of lung cancer. Carcinogens in tobacco smoke can damage the cells in the lungs, which may lead to the development of lung cancer.
More than fifty chemical compounds in tobacco smoke have been recognized as known or probable human carcinogens, some of which may be formed during or smoking and some which may exist naturally in tobacco. Several groups of carcinogens in tobacco smoke are related to lung cancer, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines, benzene, hydrazine, and vinyl chloride.
Smoking destroy bronchial and lung epithelium which leads to lung cancer. A very strong association between cigarette smoking and lung cancer has been consistently observed in studies done since the early 1950s.
These studies have shown that cigarette smoking precedes lung cancer occurrence. It has been estimated that cigarette smokers have a ten-fold higher risk of lung cancer, in comparison with nonsmokers.
With the increased number of cigarettes smoked per day, the risk is increased.
Beginning to smoke at an early age is also related to an increased risk, and the lung cancer risk declines with an increased duration of cessation.

The percentage of reduction in risk after quitting smoking depends on the duration of exposure to smoking. The observed relationship between cigarette smoking and the risk of lung cancer is consistent with different study designs and in studies of different populations all over the world. Over eighty-five percent of deaths from lung cancer can be attributed to cigarette smoking.

Smoking of other tobacco products, such as cigar and pipe smoking, is also associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Like cigarette smoking, the risk of lung cancer is increased with the frequency and years of cigar and pipe smoking.
The promotion of smoking cessation is the most cost-effective tool against lung and other smoking-related cancers and diseases.

Males who smoke marijuana daily are four times more likely to have trouble reaching orgasm than men who don’t inhale, finds a new study of 8,656 Aussies.

Other smokers had the opposite problem, experiencing premature ejaculation at nearly three times the rate of non-smokers, find a team led by Marian Pitts at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

Her team analysed data collected as part of a 2005 telephone survey of 16 to 64-year-olds. Overall, 8.7 per cent of respondents said they had gotten high in the last year, with twice as many men (11.2 per cent) admitting to marijuana use as women (6.1 per cent). People under 36 were more likely to smoke marijuana than older participants.

Even though many male smokers experienced sexual problems, they reported more partners than non-smokers. Marijuana users were twice as likely to have had two or more sex partners in the previous year than men who didn’t smoke pot.

Smoking in bed

Pitts’ team found an even stronger trend for increased sexual activity among female smokers, who were also seven times more likely to have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection in the last year than non-smokers. However, female smokers had no more problems in the bedroom than abstainers, Pitts’ team found.

Her team’s results generally back up prior studies connecting increased promiscuity and sexual problems to marijuana use.

For instance, a 2007 study led by Marie Eloi-Stiven at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York found that marijuana users were far more likely than others to take sildenafil (Viagra) recreationally. This is presumably to counteract the perceived libido-sapping effects of marijuana, her team concluded.

Complicating factors

However, the new study doesn’t establish a cause-effect relationship between marijuana and sexual performance, notes Sharon Johnson, an epidemiologist at the University of Missouri St. Louis, who has also found associations between drug use and sexual problems.

Many of the correlations between marijuana and sexual performance became apparent only after accounting for other factors, such as age, tobacco and alcohol use and occupation. “Why does it appear that the more marijuana you use the more sex difficulties you have,” Johnson asks. “There is a more complicated relationship out there somewhere.”

Nicotine effects

Nicotine is an addictive substance found in cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and smokeless tobacco.
When a smoker inhales the smoke from a cigarette, the nicotine speeds to the brain within about 10 seconds, causing it to release epinephrine (also known as adrenaline). This epinephrine release creates a rush type of feeling in the user. Although the effect is nearly immediate, the nicotine continues to act on the body for as long as 30 minutes. The nicotine also causes the release of dopamine from the brain, a neurochemical that has effect of pleasure. On average, a person who smokes 40 cigarettes a day will receive 400 hits of nicotine to the brain.
The addiction effect of nicotine is also the reason why it is so difficult for many smokers to stop smoking. When the body is used to receiving nicotine on a regular basis, and it is not provided, for whatever reason, then the individual will experience withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability, insomnia, and difficulty in paying attention to anything else.
Other effects of nicotine, such as headaches and stomach pain, may also occur. The withdrawing smoker may also experience some psychiatric symptoms, such as depression or anxiety. Some individuals who stop smoking will also experience an increased appetite, which is a key reason why many people, especially women, fear giving up smoking; they think they will gain a great deal of weight. Some people do gain about five pounds or so, and a few people gain a significant amount of weight. An additional consideration is that nicotine may boost the basal metabolic rate, leading to a slowing of the metabolism during an unknown period following nicotine cessation.
Stress or anxiety also affects the action of nicotine on the body, causing the tobacco user to need greater quantities of nicotine to achieve the same effect. Thus the smoker who is under stress and says that he or she has a need to smoke more is reporting a common reaction. Unfortunately, a sustained increased level of smoking will create a greater need for nicotine, even when the person is no longer in a stressful environment or situation.
Because of the intense hold that nicotine has on many smokers, one therapy that works for some individuals is NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY. This provides decreasing effects of nicotine and enables a withdrawal from smoking. Smokers, however, must keep in mind that using a nicotine replacement therapy—such as a skin patch, gum, or another form of nicotine replacement—while also continuing to smoke is very dangerous. Even among people who have smoked for years, the combination of cigarettes and the nicotine replacement therapy can has effect of nicotine poisoning.

he American Cancer Society estimated that about 93,000 new cases of lung cancer in men and 81,000 new cases in women would be diagnosed in 2007.

A malignant tumor in the lungs most often causes by many years of smoking cigarettes. Experts estimate that about 90 percent of all cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking. Other less common causes of lung cancer are asbestos exposure or exposure to other industrial toxins, tuberculosis, and metastatic cancer from other areas of the body, or a prior occurrence of lung cancer.
According to the authors of an annual report on cancer, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2003, the prevalence of smoking in 2001 was highest in Kentucky (30.9 percent) and was lowest in Utah (13.3 percent). The authors said, “Lung cancer deaths were lowest in Utah, the state with the lowest adult smoking prevalence, and highest in Kentucky, the state with the highest adult smoking prevalence.”
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease. In 2007, the American Cancer Society estimated that 91,930 men and 68,510 women would die of lung cancer in 207. African Americans with lung cancer have a higher death rate than whites, or 66.4 deaths per 100,000 African Americans compared with 56.7 deaths per 100,000 for whites, although the reason for this difference is unknown.
The American Cancer Society estimated that about 93,000 new cases of lung cancer in men and 81,000 new cases in women would be diagnosed in 2007. The survival rate after five years from the diagnosis of lung cancer is only about 14 percent.
Many patients are not diagnosed until they are already in the late stages of the disease.
Lung cancer is also the leading cause of cancer deaths in Canada. According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, an estimated 18,800 people died of lung cancer in 2003, including 10,900 men and 7,900 women.
There are two main types of lung cancer: nonsmall cell lung cancer (which is the more common form) and small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is more dangerous and aggressive than nonsmall lung cancer.

Cancer of the lips, mouth, or pharynx (part of the throat) primarily causes by any form of tobacco use. Cigar smokers and users of SMOKELESS TOBACCO have an increased risk of developing oral cancer. Experts estimate that at least 90 percent of all oral cancers are linked to tobacco use, including cigarettes, pipe tobacco, cigars, chewing tobacco, and any other form of tobacco that individuals may use.
In addition, patients who use both tobacco and alcohol have an increased risk of developing oral cancer.
Oral cancers are more likely to occur in middle-aged or elderly adults, although they can develop in younger individuals.
People who smoke cigarettes, cigars, or pipes may develop oral cancer at any location within the oral cavity or the oropharynx, as well as developing cancer in the esophagus, the larynx, the lungs, the bladder, the kidneys, and other organs in the body According to the American Cancer Society, this risk is increased by 50 times over non-users.
Sometimes dentists discover an oral cancer during a routine oral examination of the mouth and teeth. This is another reason why most individuals should see their dentists at least once a year.
According to the American Cancer Society, about 28,000 new cases of oral cancer were diagnosed in 2003. An estimated 7,200 people, including 4,800 men and 2,400 women, died of oral cancer in 2003. The five-year survival rate for all types of oral cancers is 56 percent, and the 10-year survival rate is 41 percent. Patients who are diagnosed with oral cancer must immediately give up smoking to avoid any exacerbation or recurrences of the cancer.
Some symptoms of oral cancer are as follows (although the person may have a noncancerous ailment and only a physician can determine if cancer is present):

A sore that does not heal

Difficulty swallowing

White or red patches in the mouth

A hoarse voice

Swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly

The link between caffeine and nicotine is complex. The researchers have shown that rats chronically exposed to caffeine self-administer nicotine at higher than control levels. , Heavy smokers also prefer more heavily caffeinated beverages, such as coffee rather than tea compared to non-smokers.

Not only caffeine but other drugs as well shown to increase nicotine consumption in animals include pentobarbital, methadone, amphetamines, and heroininally, there is the effect of tobacco itself. Smokers have significantly lower levels of monoamine oxidase-B, the enzyme responsible for breaking down dopamine in the brain. As a result, they are able to sustain higher levels of dopamine for longer periods of time, particularly if they continue smoking.

Elevated dopamine means elevated pleasure; nicotine works synergistically with alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and narcotics to provide a sustained high. Hence alcohol, caffeine and other drug users tend to smoke more heavily.
