Tobacco smoking is a major cause of lung cancer. Carcinogens in tobacco smoke can damage the cells in the lungs, which may lead to the development of lung cancer.
More than fifty chemical compounds in tobacco smoke have been recognized as known or probable human carcinogens, some of which may be formed during or smoking and some which may exist naturally in tobacco. Several groups of carcinogens in tobacco smoke are related to lung cancer, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), aromatic amines, benzene, hydrazine, and vinyl chloride.
Smoking destroy bronchial and lung epithelium which leads to lung cancer. A very strong association between cigarette smoking and lung cancer has been consistently observed in studies done since the early 1950s.
These studies have shown that cigarette smoking precedes lung cancer occurrence. It has been estimated that cigarette smokers have a ten-fold higher risk of lung cancer, in comparison with nonsmokers.
With the increased number of cigarettes smoked per day, the risk is increased.
Beginning to smoke at an early age is also related to an increased risk, and the lung cancer risk declines with an increased duration of cessation.

The percentage of reduction in risk after quitting smoking depends on the duration of exposure to smoking. The observed relationship between cigarette smoking and the risk of lung cancer is consistent with different study designs and in studies of different populations all over the world. Over eighty-five percent of deaths from lung cancer can be attributed to cigarette smoking.

Smoking of other tobacco products, such as cigar and pipe smoking, is also associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Like cigarette smoking, the risk of lung cancer is increased with the frequency and years of cigar and pipe smoking.
The promotion of smoking cessation is the most cost-effective tool against lung and other smoking-related cancers and diseases.

More than half of the smoke (by weight) from a burning cigarette is second hand smoke.

Based on scientific research experts have reached a number of conclusions about the effects of passive smoking on human health. In children and infants, it is a cause of respiratory symptoms and infections, fluid in the middle ear, asthma, reduced lung function (difficulty breathing), sudden infant death syndrome, and low birth weight. In adults, passive smoking is a cause of lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer, asthma, and cardiovascular disease.
Also researches proved that passive smoking was one of the main causes for lung cancer.

The release quoted the World Health Organization indicating that over 5 million people die around the world each year due both active and passive smoking, adding that it is common knowledge that many people innocently or unknowingly become victims of tobacco use by being passive smokers at their places of work, homes or public places.

Certain people seemed to be predisposed to developing lung cancer, and may be particularly vulnerable to second hand smoke. Non-smoking women and children seem to be more vulnerable to affect of passive smoking and development lung cancer than non-smoking men.

Passive smoking is breathing in the smoke of other smokers, while not smoking a cigarette, cigar or pipe. assive smoke is a known cause of lung cancer, heart disease, chronic lung ailments such as bronchitis and asthma (particularly in children), and low birth-weight births.

Passive smoking is breathing in the smoke of other smokers, while not smoking a cigarette, cigar or pipe.
Tobacco smoke lingers in the air hours after cigarettes have been extinguished and it is involuntarily inhaled by non smokers.
According to the American Cancer Society, 35,000–40,000 people who are not smokers die of heart disease because of passive smoking.
Passive smoke is a known cause of lung cancer, heart disease, chronic lung ailments such as bronchitis and asthma (particularly in children), and low birth-weight births.

Even a half hour of passive smoke exposure causes heart damage similar to that of habitual smokers. Non smokers’ heart arteries showed a reduced ability to dilate, diminishing the ability of the heart to get life-giving blood.

Pregnant women exposed to passive smoking are more likely to have sleep disturbances such as subjective insufficient sleep, difficulty in initiating sleep, short sleep duration, and snoring loudly or breathing uncomfortably, according to research.

Researchers at the Perth’s Telethon Institute for Child Health Research have discovered a strong link between childhood ear infections and exposure to passive smoking.
Though death due to passive smoking are comparatively lower than active smoking, it is not something which we cannot snub out as the exposure to second hand smoke can lead to serious health complications, even death which could otherwise be avoided.

The immediate effects of second hand smoke include dizziness, eye irritation, cough, headache, sore throat, and nausea. Non-smokers who are exposed to second hand at the confine of homes have 25% chances of suffering from lung cancer and heart diseases. Children have a high risk of suffering from Bronchitis, Pneumonia, Bronchiolitis and Asthma if exposed to second hand smoke.
State lawmakers continue to debate a proposed state smoking ban. Under discussion now is an idea that would allow restaurants that welcome children to ban smoking while others with age requirements could allow smoking.

Second hand smoke exposure causes heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults.
Nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their heart disease risk by 25-30% and their lung cancer risk by 20-30%.2
Breathing second hand smoke has immediate harmful effects on the cardiovascular system that can increase the risk of heart attack. People who already have heart disease are at especially high risk.
Second hand smoke exposure causes respiratory symptoms in children and slows their lung growth.
