A drug that aims to keep smokers from developing an addiction to nicotine by eliminating the good feeling they get from cigarettes is being tested in Annapolis.

A drug that aims to keep smokers from developing an addiction to nicotine by eliminating the good feeling they get from cigarettes is being tested in Annapolis.
The city is one of 20 sites testing NicVAX, a vaccine that produces antibodies that could keep smokers away from cigarettes for one year. Researchers from Community Clinical Research in Annapolis are giving the vaccine to area smokers, in addition to counseling, and noting their reactions.

Rockville-based Nabi Biopharmaceuticals produces NicVAX, which is now in its third phase of testing. Each of the 20 sites is aiming to get 50 people to use the drug to study how it affects their desire to smoke. This is the last test before federal approval is sought, said Dr. Henrik Rasmussen, a cardiologist working on the study.

“Despite everybody knowing it’s dangerous and can kill you if you smoke the rest of your life, 25 percent of the adult population is still smoking,” said Rasmussen, who is also president and chief executive officer of Texas-based Community Clinical Research. “Nicotine is more addictive than heroin, (but) people think that if you can’t stop smoking you have a weak character.”

The county Health Department’s 2007 behavioral health survey found that about 17 percent of Anne Arundel County’s adult population smokes. Each year, the department had been providing programing grants ranging from $3,000 to $9,000 to offer smoking cessation programs.

But the department had to cut $600,000 from its budget last year, and reduced those classes and activities in the process.

Although most people know that smoking is dangerous, many smokers cannot seem to quit. They defend their habit by saying that they are only affecting themselves if they smoke. However, smoking also has an effect on the health of those who don’t smoke. Family, children, friends, co-workers, and even bystanders may suffer health effects from passive smoking.

What is passive smoking? You probably are familiar with the term “secondhand smoke” to describe the smoke inhaled by someone within close proximity to a smoker. Secondhand smoke is a combination of smoke from a burning cigarette, pipe, or cigar, and the smoke exhaled by a smoker. It often contains greater amounts of harmful chemicals than inhaled smoke, for instance, double the amount of tar and nicotine. This puts passive smokers at a higher risk of smoking related diseases and health issues.

Studies of the effects of passive smoking on health show increased risks for heart disease, lung disease, and various illnesses for people constantly exposed to secondhand smoke. Statistics on smoking and passive smoking show a link between secondhand smoke and cancer, with people exposed to secondhand smoke having an increased risk of lung cancer and heart disease. Sadly, it is not uncommon for the nonsmoking spouse or child of a smoker to develop illnesses related to smoking because of long-term secondhand smoke inhalation.

Secondhand smoke is especially damaging to infants and children. Young children exposed to secondhand smoke are at a higher risk of respiratory infections and other respiratory health problems. Children who have asthma are at a higher risk of having more frequent attacks. Passive smoking is also responsible for raising a pregnant woman’s risk of having a low birth weight baby or a miscarriage.

Due to the negative health effects of secondhand smoke, smoking has been outlawed in many public areas, such as restaurants and bars. Secondhand smoke can also be an issue in the workplace.

Workers who inhale secondhand smoke have an increased risk of illness and even miss more days of work. This has led many offices to ban smoking on the premises, and some areas have even passed legislation against smoking at work.

Among workplaces with a ban on smoking, employers report more productive employees and fewer absences from work.

Smoking cigarettes may cause more cases than the two so-called breast cancer genes combined.
Scientists have been intrigued for years by hints that smoking can induce breast cancer. But for every study that purports to show a link between smoking and breast cancer, others fail to demonstrate any association.
Some researches even show that cigarette smoking decreases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. This is unrespectable because smoking causes so many other cancers, such as lung and bladder cancer. The reason for the discrepancy might be related to a complicated interaction among unidentified chemicals present in cigarette smoke.

It might lower estrogen levels in the blood of some women, thereby lowering their risk of breast cancer. Smoking also appears to lower the age at which a woman goes through menopause, which would also lower breast cancer risk because estrogen levels drop at menopause.
Although many previous studies do not implicate smoking as a risk factor for breast cancer, it is still unclear why breast tissue should be resistant to the harmful effects of cigarette smoke. Cigarettes contain roughly 3,600 chemicals, many of which are carcinogens.
These include aryl aromatic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic amines and Nnitrosamines.
Researches show that many of these chemicals spur cells in the milk ducts to become cancerous. Other researches of breast tissue taken from women indicate that human breast tissue responds to the carcinogens in a similar way.
Studies have shown that half of all women are particular sensitive to the carcinogens found in cigarette smoke and so have a higher risk of breast cancer.

Quit smoking can considerably reduce of brest cancer.

You simply put it on your credit card and go about your daily business. The federal government says the weed is as dangerous as heroin and cocaine, but California disagrees when there are those who need it for medical relief.

A recent CBS News poll found that 41% of all Americans support marijuana legalization – not just for medical reasons but also for recreational use. A majority still opposes (52%), but the numbers seem to be building for at least taking another look at decriminalization. The West leads the nation in its support for legal marijuana, and maybe that is because California’s top tax collector estimates, if taxed like liquor, it could bring in $1.3 billion every year.

Arizona’s Attorney General in January of this year said there might be reason to consider the legalization of marijuana in the state. The statement came right after a huge drug bust when AG Terry Goddard reported that the drug cartels have been smuggling up to 400,000 pounds of marijuana into the state yearly since 2003. And the drug trade remains successful only because there is such a large demand for marijuana in the U.S., according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

California has introduced legislation to regulate and tax marijuana, and if this doesn’t work, one group is planning a statewide initiative for the November 2010 ballot.

Arizona already has an initiative planned for 2010, only for medical marijuana, but it does have a provision for growing your own plants, and Oakland, CA voters have approved a sales tax for medicinal use.

If California can cover 5% of its $26.3 billion deficit by taxing marijuana, maybe it’s time to rethink the pros and cons of the much maligned cannabis.

According to medical researches smoking harms effects the body in almost all key ways:

Nicotine reaches the brain 10 seconds after cigarette smoke is inhaled. It has been found in every part of the body, including breast milk.

Passing throughout the body toxic ingredients in cigarette smoke causes damage in several different ways.

Cigarette smoke has harmful effects on red blood cells. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in the red blood cells, preventing the affected cells from carrying a full load of oxygen.

Carcinogens in cigarettes smoke damage the genes that control cell growth and cause cells to grow abnormally or reproduce too fast.

Chemical compounds in cigarette smoke such carcinogen benzopyrene bind to cells in the airways and major organs of smokers.

Smoking can cause oxidative stress that mutates DNA, promotes atherosclerosis, and also leads to chronic lung injury. Oxidative stress is believed to be behind the aging process and the development of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Smoking lowers levels of antioxidants in the body. Antioxidants repair damaged cells.
Smoking is linked to higher levels of chronic inflammation in the body.
Latest studies in addition to the already-known health effects of smoking cigarettes revealed additional risks.
For example, the Surgeon General further expanded the list of cancers that were caused by cigarette smoking to include cervical cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, and stomach cancer as well as acute myeloid leukemia.

It is also known as environmental tobacco smoke.

According to the American Cancer Society, 35,000–40,000 people who are not smokers die of heart disease because of exposure to passive smoke.
According several studies passive smoke contains more than 4,000 substances, and at least 40 of them are carcinogenic (cancer causing).
Passive smoking is known cause of lung cancer in humans.

That causes about 3,000 lung cancer deaths in nonsmokers every year. The statistics data also estimates that there are between 7,500–15,000 hospitalizations of infants and children under the age of 18 months each year for respiratory tract infections that are caused by passive smoke.

Children with asthma who live with smokers must cope with a greater number of attacks that are more severe.
Recommendations for Smokers
For their own health and the health of others, all smokers should stop smoking. Until then, people who smoke should smoke outside their home or workplace so that others will not inhale passive smoke.

Parents should make sure that they tell babysitters and family members they disapprove of smoking and should not allow smoking around their children. If a family member or other person smokes inside the house despite requests for no smoking, windows should be opened and exhaust fans turned on.
The risks of passive smoking have a negative effect on the health of those around smokers, making tobacco smoking a social as well as an individual problem.
Look at smoking from all sides – there are no benefits.

Cannabis is among the very oldest of economic plants providing humans with fiber for spinning, weaving cloth, and making paper; seed for human foods and animal feeds; and aromatic resin containing compounds of recreational and medicinal value. Human selections for varying uses and natural selection pressures imposed by diverse introduced climates have resulted in a wide variety of growth forms and chemical compositions.

The most famous users of cannabis were the ancient Hindus of India and Nepal.
Cannabis has an ancient history of ritual use and is found in pharmacological cults around the world.
Much has been written about the history of the medical uses of cannabis. In the past two centuries, there have been numerous references to the use of cannabis extracts for a wide range of disorders.

In the early part of the 20th century, a standardized cannabis elixir was marketed in the United States. Following the introduction of synthetic drugs such as barbiturates and opioids into medicine, interest in cannabis elixir declined.

The discovery of the primary active constitutent in marijuana, 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in 1964 rekindled interest in the area. However, the emphasis shifted to synthetic cannabinoids rather than the plant or plant extracts.

For example, in the 1970s, clinical studies were conducted in an effort to determine the efficacy of THC as an analgesic, antiemetic , antidepressant , appetite stimulant , and for treatment of glaucoma .

These efforts resulted in the approval of THC (dronabinol, Marinol™) for treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in 1985 and for appetite stimulation in 1992.

Couple years ago, Nevadans went to the polls and passed the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act. But currently parts of that law banning smoking in certain establishments may be repealed. Senate Judiciary Committee discussed Bill 372 and has now sent it to the Senate floor. So look at the smoking from all sides and what do smokers, non-smokers, and bar and restaurant owners think about Bill 372.From economy side they say that thousands of businesses across the Silver State have lost millions of dollars and have laid folks off left and right. According Bill 372 separated smoking areas are allow in most public places and “circumstances,” such as grocery stores and restaurants, despite the facts that secondhand smoke knows no boundaries and there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke.Opposite sideconsider that Bill 372 is simply a bad idea and will end up costing Nevadans more in the long run.

While allowing smoking to return to certain establishments could boost their revenue, from other side opponents of Bill 372 argue that this is really costing our health. But it is critical to remember that the purpose of the ban was not only to protect children from secondhand smoke, but to protect the general public – including non-smoking patrons of bars and restaurants, employees, and even other smokers – from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States. These observations justify concern about the potential adverse pulmonary effects resulting from the long-term smoking of only a few marijuana cigarettes a day.

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States.
These observations justify concern about the potential adverse pulmonary effects resulting from the long-term smoking of only a few marijuana cigarettes a day.
Doctors concluded that daily marijuana smoking was associated with an elevated risk of health care use for various health problems. Frequent smokers had a small but significant increased risk of outpatient visits for respiratory illness, and other types of illnesses compared with nonsmokers. Marijuana smoking produces histopathological changes that precede lung cancer, and long-term marijuana smoking may increase the risk of respiratory cancer.
Researchers concluded that long term cannabis use was associated with disruption of short-term memory, working memory, and attention skills in older long-term marijuana users.
For pregnant marijuana smokers, there is also concern about the possibility of genotoxic effects on the fetus, resulting in heightened risk of birth defects or childhood cancer.
The researchers also suggested that marijuana use might interact with mutagenicity and other risk factors to increase the risk of head and neck cancer.
There was examined the health effects of smoking marijuana by comparing the medical experience of daily marijuana smokers who never smoked tobacco with a demographically similar group of nonsmokers of either substance.
Smoking only a few marijuana cigarettes a day (without tobacco) has the same effect on the prevalence and chronic respiratory symptoms and the extent of tracheobronchial epithelial histopathology as smoking more than 20 tobacco cigarettes a day (without marijuana).
Most patients described serious problems from marijuana: more than 80% of male and 60% of female patients met criteria for marijuana dependence, 66% of marijuana-dependent patients reported withdrawal, and more than 25% had used marijuana to relieve withdrawal symptoms (e.g., irritability, restlessness, insomnia, anorexia, nausea, sweating, salivation, elevated body temperature,
tremor, and weight loss) that were clinically significant.
